The Policing Board has a number of statutory duties with regard to the DPPs. Key statutory roles are:
- The appointment of Independent Members.
- Issuing and revising a Code of Practice on the exercise of functions and responsibilities of a DPP. This includes the development of a DPP Members’ Handbook and accompanying guidance notes.
- Assessing the effectiveness of how DPPs carry out their duty.
- Assessing the level of public satisfaction with the performance of DPPs.
- Providing financial support to Councils to fund DPPs.
- Removal of DPP Members from office.
- The Policing Board may call on a DPP to submit a report to the Policing Board on any matter connected with the exercise of the DPP’s functions.
In addition to the statutory roles that the Policing Board undertakes in relation to DPPs, the Policing Board also provides a number of other roles. These other roles are:
- Providing advice and guidance to DPPs across the full range of DPP roles and responsibilities.
- Supporting the development of DPPs through training and briefing seminars.
