The Northern Ireland Policing Board has confirmed that George Hamilton will take up the position of Chief Constable on 30 June 2014. Board Chair Anne Connolly said:

“I am pleased to confirm that George Hamilton will take up the position of Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland on 30 June 2014. His command and the upcoming appointment of a new Deputy Chief Constable will mark a new phase in the leadership of the PSNI.

Today’s monthly meeting was Matt Baggott’s last formal engagement with the Board and I would like to record my thanks to him for his service during his tenure. In the last 5 years as Chief Constable of the PSNI, Matt has been committed to the delivery of a personal, professional and protective policing service for all in our community. There have been many challenges for policing in Northern Ireland in that time, but there has also been continued progress in the work of the officers and staff of the PSNI and the service provided to the community.

Matt’s contributions to policing and the community during his career have been substantial. I record my appreciation to him for the leadership he has given to the PSNI and as a Board we wish him well for the future and his retirement.”
