Review of the role of PSNI in supporting legacy inquests

At the Policing Board meeting held today (30 July) Board Members expressed concern about the Justice Minister David Ford’s decision not to commission Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC) to undertake a review of the PSNI’s role in supporting legacy inquests.

Board Chair Anne Connolly said: “The Board asked the Justice Minister to commission the review due to concerns about the impact that delays and issues around the disclosure process for Coronial Inquests is having on confidence in policing. We also wanted to be satisfied, through independent review, that the systems and processes in place are efficient and effective.

Whilst we are very aware of current financial constraints, this is a very important issue for the Board. We will now be writing to the Minister to seek further clarification on his decision not to commission the inspection and look for a way forward.”
