Question

In response to the PSNI answer to a recent media enquiry on the cost of two BearCat armoured tactical vehicles (which the PSNI has advised had a cost of £1,017,906.27) I was online looking at a picture /description of the vehicles and on all sites I visited they indicate a cost in the US of circa $300,000 each, which would indicate the ‘extras and extended warranties’ are more than double the price of each vehicle.

Could you please clarify that this is correct?

Answer

The cost of the two Bearcat vehicles purchased by the Police Service reflect additional features above the basic vehicle specifications.

  • The additional costs for each vehicle include:
  • Base vehicle upgrades and European vehicle preparation – including Diesel Engine upgrade, fire suppression, cameras and vehicle protections ($129,000)
  • Elevated platform system to include platforms, stabilisers and tactical ladders ($174,000)
  • Operator training, extended warranty and shipping ($85,000)
  • The final cost also reflects exchange rate movements of $80,000
  • The vehicles and modifications were procured through national frameworks.
