City Centre issues

Question

I would like to get your views on the very worrying picture of drug deaths, homelessness and other issues within Belfast City Centre.  We have had correspondence from members of the public expressing concern and worry about their safety in the city centre.  And I know this isn’t an issue limited to Belfast.  Obviously addressing these issues is not the role of the police alone, and indeed the interventions that are needed are often best delivered by people outside of the justice system.  But I know it is often PSNI that are around at 3am on a Saturday night.  Can you advise us what PSNI are doing, what work is ongoing with other partners to address these issues, what more you feel could be done, and is there anything you need support from the Board on, that might contribute to ameliorating this extremely complex and profoundly tragic situation for the families affected and the frontline staff who have to deal with these situations?
