To ask the Chief Constable; whether he believes Mobile Safety Cameras and their associated resources could be more effectively deployed and, if so, in what way.

The role of the Road Safety Partnership is to support the Northern Ireland Road Safety Strategy (NIRSS) 2020 by using targeted enforcement to reduce the casualties on Northern Ireland’s roads. Looking at the collisions recorded at permanent mobile camera sites over the period 2015 – 2019 there was a reduction in Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) collisions of 36% when compared with 2004 – 2008 (the baseline used in the NIRSS).  However not all of this decrease can be directly attributed to the presence of safety cameras as there was also a general decrease (29%) in KSI collisions in Northern Ireland across the same five year period.

It is notable that a substantial number of studies conducted in Great Britain and further afield have all reached the similar conclusion that Speed Cameras have an important role to play within the enforcement options available to police and road safety partners.

There will be further investment in hand held speed detection devices over the coming year as part of our Horizon 2025 Strategy.
