Speaking about the attack in North Belfast, Policing Board Chair Brendan Mullan said:
On behalf of the Northern Ireland Policing Board I condemn this horrific attack, an act of violence that has no place in our community.
Our thoughts are with the victim, their loved ones and all those who witnessed this terrifying incident.
We thank the police and Ambulance Service staff as first responders, but also those individuals who courageously stepped forward to intervene.
As a Board we understand there is real fear and community concern, and we welcome that the PSNI has moved quickly to provide public clarity and information. The Chief Constable has also set out policing plans to provide assurance to the community.
It is important now that policing is given the space it needs to conduct a thorough investigation and we ask people to follow police advice regarding information being posted and shared online.
At this time, it is vital that we stand together in rejecting such violence and supporting the work of the police. Bringing disruption or disorder onto the streets and into communities will serve no purpose and will divert policing resources away from people in real need of service.
We thank the political, civic leaders and people with influence who are working with the police at this time, and to calm tensions.
Anyone with information that will assist the police investigation is asked to provide it to the police or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
