Statement on the investigation into police conduct relating to offending activities of Alexander McCartney between 28 January 2016 and 12 March 2019

Speaking about the Police Ombudsman’s Report, Board Chair Mukesh Sharma said:

“Today our thoughts are with all those who were victims of this vile predator.

This Report highlights a series of concerns around the handling of this investigation, and exposes the serious risks of harm when policing does not have the capacity to meet the investigative demands placed upon it.

As a Board we have prioritised the need for police to work to prevent Violence Against Women and Girls, and particularly for online crimes like sextortion which have such devastating consequences.

In today’s operating environment where this type of online crime is growing, this Report’s findings clearly set out the need for prioritisation of digital evidence to ensure those at greatest risk are protected.

The Board will discuss the Report and its findings with the Chief Constable and with the Director of the National Crime Agency at the December Board meeting.”
