Question

The Chief Constable admirably signed the white ribbon day pledge in November. Can you please confirm how many officers in the PSNI have faced allegations of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and rape in the 24 months, either through complaints to PSD, to the Ombudsman, or criminal proceedings in court? What have been the outcomes of these complaints, and do any officers remain suspended on full pay?

Answer

During the past 24 months a total of 51 officers have been reported to Professional Standards for alleged domestic abuse, sexual assault or rape. Where criminal offences are alleged a criminal investigation is conducted, prior to potential misconduct proceedings being brought against the officer. 14 of the officers being investigated for the above offences are currently suspended from duty. Of these 51 officers, 1 has been dismissed from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, and 30 cases are still ongoing.

Professional Standards do not hold detailed information on complaints made to the Police Ombudsman or the status of their investigations, however during the past 24 months 62 allegations under the category of sexual assault were made to the Police Ombudsman’s Office.
