Question

DCC Hamilton told the Board on the 7th July 2022 that the PSNI were investigating 130 cases of Gross Misconduct.

  1. Do they benchmark this on a per capita headcount against comparable police services / forces and if so, what is the conclusion?
  2. Do they benchmark average times for processing GM investigations, and if so what are the results?

Answer

The Police Service of Northern Ireland have not conducted such benchmarking to date. However, the Head of Professional Standards Department has proposed a continuous improvement project to examine the remit and staffing requirements for Professional Standards. The project work will commence on 1 August 2022. The terms of reference have been approved by the Deputy Chief Constable.

The project will involve an analysis of a range of performance management information including data from police services in England and Wales to act as a form of benchmarking.
The objectives of the project will form part of the briefing to Board Members at the proposed Special Board Meeting, once a date has been finalised.
