The PSNI should have access to minimum force options. This includes tasers.
On 11th May 2026 the SACMILL Panel (medical review panel) updated its advice on the deployment of Taser 10. It says that it was “up to individual forces to conduct an EQIA” on its use. Will the PSNI do so?
Answer
PSNI maintain human rights to the core of all decision-making and have previously published a detailed EQIA concerning the implementation of Taser devices within the PSNI, which are only issued to specially trained firearms officers.
PSNI contend that the Taser 10 device is an updated version of previous devices and it is not a significant departure from the previous versions of the device, but rather an updated device with improved safety measures. As such we do not believe that a fresh EQIA is required in these circumstances. We will however continue to engage with the NIPB Human Rights advisor on this issue and take cognizance of his view with regards to any requirement for a new EQIA.
